Nice guy. He's a bio-engineer or some other crazy big-boy career, so jokes about offshore money or trust funds will have to wait for another one of my posts

Can I just say that I hate the look of 2+1 garage bays? This isn’t as bad as most, but to me they always scream “we were too cheap to do this properly”.

Seriously. Why don’t they just do 3 separate bays? That’s what any sensible person would do.

Two + one garage doors are very common in N.W. Ohio, even higher end homes. Three separate doors are more expensive, plus added supports make backing into or striking a part of the garage more likely. Usually the smaller door is offset slightly to break up the large, flat surface.

Yes, but you don’t understand. You’re saving a tiny amount on a house that’s worth 4M-5M dollars.
3-5 oversized single garage doors is what I usually expect on a high end house.

That’s what our new house has. It’s not ideal aesthetically speaking but it makes a nice work area when you park your project in the center of the two car bay.

Actually it’s a two car garage- one large “I or my spouse can’t park” bay and another normal one. It’s like the yoga pants of garages- one size fits all!

10/10 wouldn’t mind those two in my driveway. Pretty damn good for a bio-engineer, must work for big pharma or cosmetics.

I hope he has two other cars in the garage, otherwise he deserves to be slapped. I do not get why people pay to have garages and then don’t use them for intended purpose.

I would love to have one bay larger that than the other so I could do actual work by parking in the center of the bay. The real crime here is not moving the doors to the side of the house so you can’t see the doors from the street. I thought that’s what most of the swells do? That way you have more yard, less giant concrete pad in the front and you can have a gate across the drive.

I understand plenty. The majority of the
cost to build
a home in the Pacific N.W. isn’t in the materials, it’s in the land. A builder will save money where they can to make a profit.

Some people have a lot of crap(my opinion is that if you have so much crap you should get rid of it, but who knows).
Also, I sometimes park outside if it’s hot(at least until it cools down) because pulling a hot car under your house radiates heat right up to your living space. Lots of people don’t have A/C in the PNW(I would be surprised if this house didn’t, but I have been to similarly nice houses that did not. Rare, but happens) and even if so it’ll still keep the house cooler.

It’s true that having the garage point to side, or even the rear of the house is a much better look. I think the modern design and the fact that the structure on top of the garage doesn’t take up the entire garage footprint helps with that here though. Might have a different opinion seeing the whole building though.

3 separate bays , or a double and then a single around the corner in another part of the house. I always thought that was cool, like you keep your project car in its own special place.
I have a neighbor in a very plain, mainstream neighborhood with 4 identical single doors in a row (side entry, thankfully — corner lot). That’s baller. Probably 2 Camries and 2 Accords, though.

If these are outside, I want to know what in the garage.

As my father always said “I don’t want my house looking like a storage locker.” Those doors are nice. But they are still garage doors. All of that aside, I am a fan of the larger bay. That way you can put your boat trailer in at an angle more easily.

Extra deep bays are nice if you can get them. Everyone know we fill out garages with crap, so why not leave some space in front of the cars for storage?

I have a ton of crap in the garage, but my cars aren’t cheap, so I make an effort to move that crap so I can park the cars in the garage.

My garage has minimal crap, just cars. Unless you count the Rover’s wiring, in which case I too have a ton of crap
